The ancients were naturalists who lived simple lives but their knowledge about the workings of the universe was astoundingly deep. They knew that of the Panch Mahabhutas or the five elements, only Tejas or the fire element couldn’t be sullied, instead it had the innate power to purify everything it touched. They also discovered that the fire element was the only element that did not exist in nature and could be created by man. But not only was creating it difficult, understanding, sustaining and finally mastering it was even more challenging. Hence the seers bowed to it, according it awe and reverence; even worshipping it. The fireball in the sky was the live and vibrating manifestation of the fire element that could not only bestow life but burn to a cinder as well. If its potential could be harnessed by man, no feat could be insurmountable. So the Surya Namaskar was showing gratitude before the most powerful element in the universe. The Surya Namaskar is an excellent group of asanas which can be practiced on varying levels of awareness. For some it is a complete sadhna because it includes asana, pranayama, mantra chanting and meditation techniques. For others it is an exercise regimen to shed weight and remain physically fit. The twelve asanas are the physical structure around which the form of the practice is woven. Their performance, in a steady, rhythmic sequence reflects the rhythms of the universe, the twelve hours of the day, the twelve zodiac signs and the bio-rhythms of the body. This form and rhythm come together to nourish the body- mind complex generating the transforming force which produces a richer and more fulfilling life.
